Donavon Vizina is a 39 year old man living in Eunice, Louisiana. Donavon was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in July 2013. He has been using cannabis oil for a year to cure his cancer. Donavon has been in remission since January 2015.
Abbi: What made you decide to use medical cannabis?
Donavon: Well, I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in July 2013. They said that my only options were to do chemo or get a transplant. I got a call from my friend in Oregon who told me about cannabis oil and said she could help with me cancer if done correctly. I figured I had nothing else to lose.
Abbi: Do you live in a state/location where medical cannabis is legal?
Donavon: No, I live in Louisiana, so we have to do everything behind everybody’s back.
Abbi: What sort of treatment did you seek before turning to cannabis?
Donavon: I started chemo in 2013 and did 6 days of it and then went into remission. I went back to do another 7 days, then another 6 days of a different type of chemo that gave me a mutation. They said the only other thing I could was to have a transplant.
Abbi: Was this treatment helping or hurting you?
Donavon: It helped when I was first diagnosed in 2013 but then when the cancer came back in 2015 it did nothing but hurt. It killed my bone marrow and gave me bone marrow damage.
Abbi: Did you speak with your doctor about using medical cannabis?
Donavon: I mentioned natural treatments but I wasn’t specific on what exactly I was using. I wanted the hardcore proof to confront him and say look, it did work and it’s something he should look into.
Abbi: How long have you been using medical cannabis?
Donavon: I’ve been using it for a little over a year and have had no problems whatsoever.
Abbi: How has your condition improved?
Donavon: My counts have risen 46,000 points even after my doctor said it wouldn’t rise. It actually killed my cancer in 6 days. I was getting blood work and it actually showed. I brought my medical records to prove to it and it showed every count getting better, and at the same my blast was dropping. My cancer was dying and all the other cells in my body were getting better. We brought it up with my doctor and he just kind of brushed it off. I wanted him to know that this is how I treated myself when western medicine failed me and that cannabis has changed my life. I’m in better shape and I don’t have to worry about it anymore. Everyday that goes by I’m getting better. I’m jogging and am maintaining a good diet.
Abbi: Is there anything you think people should know who are thinking about using and/or are hesitant to trying medical cannabis?
Donavon: It goes great with chemotherapy. You don’t have to give up on your western medicine. But when you have nowhere else to turn, why not use this. You have nothing to lose. We need to get people to understand that it can work, and it will work, and we just need to get it out there. My mother hated cannabis all her life and now she’s seeing that it helps me and she loves it. We just need to educate people.
