CrossFit icons and 2019 champions of the official Games challenges, Mat Fraser and Tia-Clair Toomey train in Cookeville’s CrossFit Mayhem with Toomey’s husband, Shane Orr. They recently aligned with Beam CBD brand and conducted an interview outlining the recovery process that can be aided with the use of CBD for relaxation, better sleep, and reduced discomfort.
CrossFit is one of the most well-known fitness regimens of today, and both Mat Fraser (four time) and Tia-Clair Toomey (three time) are champions of the CrossFit Games. In a new article from BR, both Fraser and Toomey are now involved with beam CBD company, allowing them to enhance their athletic recovery and performance along with sleep.
The athletes frequently seek out ways to improve their body through their training and recovery. Fraser and Toomey live in Cookeville, as the latter lives with husband Shane Orr. This trio is known for training together at CrossFit Mayhem. While there’s some competition between the three-time Fittest Woman on earth with Fraser and Orr, Toomey said, “It’s really quite cool just to be able to have his level of experience right there with me.”
Beam is a brand that offers CBD products for consumes, aiming to target athletic recovery, wellness, and rest. The company has developed THC-free tinctures, salves, and protein bars at affordable prices. CBD is an abbreviation of cannabidiol, which is extracted from the hemp plant. The use of the CBD products from beam helps these athletes in their recovery through sleep, discomfort, and relaxation.
Sleep is a crucial part of the recovery process for both Toomey and Fraser. Toomey commented that she’s “learned the value of good sleep” in the recovery process. With the necessity for eight to ten hours of sleep a night, Toomey adds that eliminating screen time and creating a dark environment can help with this routine. Fraser added that only getting six hours of sleep a night, rather than his typical nine to ten hours, he isn’t able to give his maximum performance the following day.
There are many studies that attach the use of CBD to that of pain relief, as it boosts the effectiveness of the endocannabinoid system and the way it balances the body. The recovery process can greatly benefit from the use of these products, drastically helping with the DOMS (Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness).
Building upon these benefits, both Toomey and Fraser discuss how important recovery is in a daily regimen, and the recovery can also come from stress and anxiety. CBD benefits touch on the central nervous system to relieve anxiety, reduce cortisol levels, and essentially improve the mood. Toomey points to the benefits of active recovery, stating:
“Training for recovery is worth considering if you have the time and want to take your training seriously. Active recovery sessions are light, low-volume exercise whose main purpose is to accelerate the body’s recovery responses. It might sound counter-intuitive, but your body doesn’t want to be sat on the sofa: we’re built to move every day and casual exercise will keep the blood flowing and de-stress the mind.”
Nutrition is a crucial step in recovery, just as much as it is essential to the pre-workout and the rest of the diet. The diet determines how recovery happens, how much progress that the individual experiences, and the way that the body performs. The quality of food determines how the body reacts. While junk food can have the right number of calories, maintaining good health and establishing a healthy recovery process are inhibited without this focus. Toomey explained:
“Micronutrients (such as vitamins and minerals) are key for proper health and athletic performance through processes like energy transfer and protein synthesis, both of which are fundamental to strength and fitness. I keep it simple and give my body the best chance by sticking to whole foods wherever possible – cuts of meat, high-quality fish and lots of fruit and veg should be the cornerstone of any athletic diet!”
Fraser takes a similar approach to nutrition, explaining, “I tried to take my diet to a more extreme place, but it wasn’t for me. It was taking too much time and energy away from different parts of my life. Now, instead of obsessing, I just try to eat well: No junk food. No soda. Very little that comes in wrappers. It’s mostly meat, vegetables, and fruit. If I’m hungry, I eat. If I’m not hungry, I don’t. There’s not too much of a science behind it.”
Beam aims to offer the high-quality standards that athletes like Toomey and Fraser demand in their routine, using CO2 extraction, facilities that are compliant with the 2018 Farm Bill, and choosing extracts that are rich in phytocannabinoids.
